Incoming links to the wrong page

Good links to homepage but homepage cannot be optimized for them

I got some good new links from other sites with keyword rich link text. Those links are going to the homepage but the homepage is not optimized for those words and I don't want to change the homepage as it is getting good traffice for other keywords. I don't get the sites linking to me to link to an internal page.

So if the homepage is optimized for gadgets and I am getting links from other sites with widgets as link text can I somehow transmit those incoming links to an internal page dealing with widgets? Will the incoming links with Gadgets as link text help my internal page though they are going to the homepage and not to the Gadgets page?

Thank you for your help!

No, the only way is to contact the webmasters and grovel a little.

surely a sligh addition into title and description should NOT make any major difference to your homepage.

many will argue that on page text is essential, I say its a benefit, however in your situation adding the "text" which people are linking to you by in "title and description" can only have a positive effect.

as for travelling to internal pages, PASS, dont know the answer to the one.

So those links only help with pagerank and there is no factor like theming which would pass the relevance of those incoming links to another page.

Even if I put a link on my homepage with the same link text as the incoming links the relevance of the incoming links wouldn't be tranferred to the internal page.

Having said that if you have some high quality links with "widgets" in the anchor text pointing to a page you wouldn't really need that page optimised for "widgets" to get a good ranking so long as "widgets" isn't to much of a highly tagetted phrase - check out who is #1 for "widgets" and how many backlinks they have with "widgets" in the anchor text.

Hope this makes sense.

Not certain if there would be any theming value for the internal page, but my personal feeling is that "optimizing" pages and links is overrated anyway.

A bigger concern is those people who come to your site via those links looking for widgets and finding nothing. Try to include a compelling and easily found link to the appropriate section of the website, so that you don't lose them.

Thank you for your valuable feedback!

I will certainly put a link to the widgets page on the homepage. You are right, visitors come first.

There are some strong competitors for Widgets so I could need all help from those external links to get into a good position.
