Does anyone know why the google dance still happens? Do they just enjoy watching us lot squirm.

I understand the way that the rank works, and that it takes 20 or so (src.backrub) itterations for the ranks to normalise.. I was just wondering if anyone knows what would happen if google were to dance - a single itteration - every day, or dance constantly..

Is there a mathematical reason to do it one go? or is it more to do with managing the roll-out?

:) J.

That's what I've been thinking: when will they start updating continuously?

I think one of the problems with updating constantly would be SEO's could find out what works and what doesn't faster.

As it stands now it's a bit more of a challenge because it's a game of "hurry up and wait".

First, the dance is not just recalculating PR, most of the time it also means adjustment of the algorithms. And we all know that you should not do this type of things on the live servers ;). As the dance is now, the folks at google can still make changes before the new results go to the normal users.
The more important reason imho is that every iteration of the pagerank-algo needs to recalculate all pages involved (you can't just leave out the unchanged ones). But if you run it constantly, most of the recalculated pages won't have changed (or spidered), so it would be a bit of a waste of ressources.
And, the best reason: the dance adds to the evocation of quasi-religious sentiments in webmasters. It is somewhat reliable, but you never know when it happens exactly, and it is very important for you - quite like the natural gods bringing rain or the floods of the nile. And its will (algorithm and the time to dance) is not known to the believers, though some priests (GoogleGuy) give hints sometimes, which, in turn, are interpreted by the followers of this obscure god.
And since the will is not known, there is a rise in theological speculation, like "why does it dance, anyway"? ;)

I'll be taking up donations to procure a monitor and keyboard cleaning service.... I never thought myself 'at risk' of drinking while reading at these forums.

Forwarned is forarmed.

(Please pass the paper towels.)

P.S. Funny as hell.
