A quick question : are links pointing to other pages on the same domain considered outbound links?

Well, they're outbound from the page they are on but not site outbound.

Ok, so do they count as outbound in terms of the maximum limit suggested by the google guidelines?

Someone posted in another thread that according to google there are not to be over 100 outbounds on a site.

I'd say so, yes.

Its 100 per page not per site :)

depends, if google are saying per site then internal links shouldn't come into it.

if so then a site with a sitemap (and more than a hundred pages) would be penalised.

Google doesnt rank on a site basis, it looks at each page as a free standing entity.

but we are referring to INTERNAL links not external (see first post) which means that goole would penalise (or not like) any sitemap with over 100 internal links, i just cannot see google referring to this.

Keep the links on a given page to a reasonable number (fewer than 100).

From Google webmaster FAQ, it doesnt mention the word penalise.

They wont penalise for having more than 100 links, they dont dictate the page content they only tell you what they would rather you have for their purposes!

Craig you are right:

# Offer a site map to your users with links that point to the important parts of your site. If the site map is larger than 100 or so links, you may want to break the site map into separate pages.

looks like i have to redesign about 37 sitemaps :)

and i was hoping to get some fishing in this weekend :(
