Apparently having the free Google Websearch and Sitesearch on your sitye is a good idea. I've heard that Google likes this and that it won't do your rankings any harm. I was wondering how much modification Google would find acceptable. Suppose your site had a black background and the Google logo looked bad. It would be pretty easy to either replace it or remove it altogether. Then suppose you went a bit further and changed the default setting to 'Search mydomain.com', so that the radio button for the site was already checked. Then you might want to go even further and remove the 'Search WWW' radio button all together. Both easy code modifications. And finally, you might want to round things off by changing the text on the search button to 'Search' rather than 'Google Search'. Bingo! A custom made site search. My question is; would Google realise this on its next crawl, have kittens and punish such an evil ploy by dropping the site or would Googlebot simply be happy that you were, in effect, still using a Google search on the site and be at ease with the creative and enterprising code modification? Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
