Subdomains and themes

Can themes be different?

If I have a site that has 6 different themes, each specialising in an area of life, say money, personal developement, health, family, etc, how can I have one theme? There are 6 different themes. Will giving each area a subdomain solve this problem? Will the SE's class each subdomain as separate and with its own theme or will the whole site be one big diluted mess?!

Thanks!

What a great question aross and welcome to Webmasterworld.

I wouldn’t mind taking a stab at this since I have an interest in both themes and subdomains (canonicals).

…how can I have one theme?

Are you creating a hub? I’m trying to figure out why you have so many unrelated themes on one site. A hub can be a good solution to varied themes and drawing them together. When I do this I find the unifying theme, similar to what you suggest with “each specialising in an area of life”. Can you bring it in tighter than that? Are you looking at home life or business life or something even more focused?

With subdomains I have used them for years with no problems but I would suggest you run a site search for subdomains or canonicals first if you don’t have experience with them. We’ve talked about them in some detail over the last few years so you’ll find a wealth of information.

It’s difficult to discuss themes and canonicals without specific keywords so if you haven’t joined the Supporters Forum I would suggest that sna we could really get into depth with this. There’s a bit more freedom for that back there.

Thanks for your quick response, paynt!

"Are you creating a hub?"

Well, I am new to themes and subdomains, so I don't know technically what you mean by 'hub'... but a tighter theme... The site is targeted at 35-60 year olds to gather all useful information about the main areas of life. The main sections will be - money, personal development, relationships, career & business, health & fitness, leisure & pasttimes. Now I know there are sites with multiple topics, is this a no-no now? The common theme - real life, real information, real solutions. A one-stop, portal. Is this a no-no?

From what I have read I understand the benefits of tightly themed sites... and each main section will be tightly themed, but I do want to include each section in the one domain/one site. Would subdomains sort this out or will I have to use a separate domain for each section then link them together?

Thank you for the suggestion to search the topic, I will, certainly!

Google considers sub-domains to be different sites. I think what you described is a good example of a valid use of sub-domains.
