I've got a technical site that has a large number of pdfs, mostly datasheets or manuals for their widgets. But I am not happy with the pdfs to be listed before my html-pages, because I do not think users will manually go to the root, and browse the rest of the site most of the time.
Since many pages have exactly the same text as the pdfs, but still rank behind them, I think it goes something like this: my pages all include the navigation, which google likes, since it is pure text, so I get a good rank for my "blue widgets" page since it it constantly referred to in the navigation. But then, on it, there is, apart from the navigation, only one further link - "datasheet for blue widgets", and since this datasheet has the same text, but not the navigation text of the html page, it seems to rank better most of the time.
Could this be correct? And would making a link in the pdf help (do they count in google)? Any other suggestions?

how about a javascript link towards the pdf documents?

Links in pdf documents count as far as I could check.
Do a search in Google for:
"http://www. filetype:pdf"
(you get the higher Pageranked pdf's for which you could possibly see backlinks)
and check until you find one that has active links in their pages.
click on it (the link) and do a backlink check.
I can stick an example if you wish.
(I could be wrong but I think ATW does not follow them)
