Cross Linking Question

About to launch second site. Want to avoid penalty!

Hello,

I've been reading up on cross linking as I'm about to launch a second site that will be hosted on the same server as my first one. I have a few questions to see if anyone here could answer - I don't want to risk a penalty of any kind on my first, and primary, site.

My primary site is A. My new site is B. I would like to link site A to B, but B will not be linked to A. From my reading, this should not be a problem.

However, I would also like to get some reciprocal links from some of my friends sites (just about 5-10 links or so, nothing hugely major). These friends sites currently link to my main site A. If they put up return links on their own sites to my new site B, what effect, if any, will happen. Will google look at this as some sort of mini link farm and penalize all the sites that exist on the IP address - thus penalizing both sites A and B?

Hi jimh009 - that few of links would not bother me. I would use a slightly different anchor text and/or description for each. Slightly different to maximize on authority building opportunities while mixing it up a bit.

Don't worry things will be fine. I have 6 related sites linked together in a similar fashion. Plus I link to those sites from other related sites.

I do agree that using slightly different anchor text will be benificial.

This sort of linking should be fine. I have similar links going on with sites I run. Just don't link every page to every page or do closed loop linking and you'll be OK.

Thanks everyone. I thought this would be ok but - better to be sure than to get a penalty!

What is "closed loop" linking, anyway?

A closed loop is when you do have external links from site A but only to another site B which in turn links only to C which links to D which links back to A.

If you add some links from B to D or from C to A or something like this you end up with a pocket which isn't good either!

We do it all of the time - not for PR but because our site helps our Clients and visa-versa. G dosnt penalize for this unless you get out of control.

Agreed! I don't see any negative effect after some like myself were concerned a few months ago.
