Google Directory and New RDF Dump

Logistics, timeline...

Now that DMOZ has generated a new RDF dump and all that data is up to date, what happens now with the Google Directory?

When will the Google Directory show the new dump?

When will the new PR of the Google Directory be factored into the results?

Right now there are thousands of sites that will be getting a second link equal to their DMOZ link, which happens to be their best incoming link. Thousands of other sites will be losing their best link (because they have been removed from DMOZ sometime since September for one reason or another). This will result in significant changes in many competitive areas. The question is then, when will this change truly be felt... in two weeks or in six weeks?

My guess would be during the next Google full update cycle ;)

Google will get around to updating their own directory in their own sweet time. No way of knowing when that will be. PR effects won't occur in the next update, as the deep crawl for this month should be over. If Google updates the directory before the next crawl, PR effects should be noticeable in the March update.

Let's guess, 2005.

Google already lists the oldest results in their directory with huge amounts of porn spam. As far as I know it's the slowest updating web directory and the most spammed one.

As for the spam, seems like they don't care, otherwise they would at least remove the expired domains which were meant for disabled people and different organisations and now have porn content, they are still listed in their directory
since back in 2002.

>> the deep crawl for this month should be over <<

You are spot on Rfgdxm1... I reckon the ODP usually gets crawled early on. However, I got some interesting Google Fresh pages this week, which suggest it MAY have re-crawled. Could be wishful thinking of course!

It's great to have an up to date ODP again though... especially speaking as a user.

Seopti.... I'd chill out if I were you. You may not like Google or the ODP (just gauging from your post), but in truth these are possibly the most small guy friendly providers in the biz.

SEOPTI - the point is that now the ODP RDF dump has been produced, when this database works through to the Google update (two or more likely six weeks time) then you will see a big change in the quality of the Google Directory sites. Sites that have changed their content or gone 404 since September will most likely have been taken out of the ODP but due to the RDF dump problems not the Google Directory. That will soon change now that the RDF dump problems have been resolved.

According to a source, they stated that Google replied to them in an e-mail that they had planned to update the Google directory sometime before the next Google dance. Seems reasonable, as I wouldn't expect the dance until the very end of this month. According to posts here, the deep crawl was a bit late, and just finished in the last day or so.

Seems to me, Google will always do everything possible to have the best results. As an updated ODP will help increase the quality of results, I'd expect Google to be the first search engine to use the updated RDF Dump.

They've probably already restarted their crawl for the month. IMHO.

Google doesn't need to restart the crawl. Check ODP listed sites with the link: command. Google has always crawled the ODP directly every month. Google doesn't need the RDF dump to find ODP listed sites. However, by updating the Google directory that'll make it almost 5 months more current.

Google does need to recrawl. There are many other issues especially involving sites that have been removed for spam or duplicates.

I believe this is why Google has given less and less importance over the last few months to listings at ODP. Now I bet we see them have a duplicate importance factor once again. Why not. Quality is what counts.
