We had a redirect on one domain to another whilst we were redesigning it's format. During that time Google merged the two together. i.e. if I search for www.domain1.com, google lists www.domain2.com as the only result.

Well, now the redesign is complete, and I have no idea if or when Google would unmerge the domains. Domain1.com has plenty of incoming links, so I guess Google would pick it up next time they do a deep crawl?

What redirect did you use, a 301 redirect or a 302 redirect (The last one is the preferred one).

If the content is different and you don't use a redirect anymore, i would guess that they will list the domains as 2 seperate ones, when did you remove the redirect?

Thanks Lazerubb

I am unsure, but I believe the redirect was 301. We removed it and uploaded new content sometime last week.

I'm facing the same problem, does Google visit the redirected domain without me resubmitting?

And what time does it take? One update or two or even more?

Any experiences with that?

cwebb, you don't need to re-submit. If you have any good links to the page, it should be crawled.

For the full index, expect to wait one or two updates. Fresh listings may come in sooner.

I've been trying to get Google to un-merge some of my urls for 6-7 months.

Tried everything, from shutting down urls, perm redirects.

Nothing works. To me, it seems impossible.

I just put all the urls that Google had merged back together. And now Googlebot is hitting my site heavy and pages are showing back up.

Pages are showing up again, but, under the old url, and not the one I want to promote, but it's better then all the mess of trying to get them unmerged.

Just leave them together, but try to get your incoming links updated.

Holy Cow Phil

That sounds awful. We are ready to go with a new brand, like, now. This isn't what I wanted to hear. Has anyone else got a different experience?

I was able to unmerge 4 of my sites in less than 2 months. All I did was use the google form to report a dead domain, put a robots.txt file that said not to crawl, and change the content of the page.

1 of those things worked. They are now unmerged.

Tried the same thing with no success.

I guess it's "are you feeling lucky"
