Google update over?

I thought it was, but results suddenly changed today

I am in the habit of recording our google rankings after each update for all search terms I can think of. I did this 2 days ago, thinking update was over, but today our ranking suddenly jumped up for all major search terms. Suddenly from No.15 to No.1 or No.10 to No.5.

If this is just a bit of everflux, I'll take it as a bonus, but if it sticks like this great! Did something happen ovenight, like PR was taken into account (we are 3rd ranked in our category on the directory).

Anyone else seen sudden movements today?

PS If this is really our new rankings and not just a strange blip, I'd like to thank everyone on this web site for a great job and thanks for all I've learned here. I don't think any of our competitors are using WebmasterWorld, and this is certainly working to our advantage!

;)

Anyway, things like that do happen, and often they reverse pretty quick too. What happened to the pages which were listed above you?

The pages that were above us are now below us ;)

A lot of the top ranked sites are old sites and they don't seem to change much. I think it's just that our relatively new site (uploaded in June 2002) is catching them up and overtaking them. The older sites belong to more established companies and I believe they take their positions for granted, get a bit complacent, and do little in the way of linking or SEO (that's legit SEO not spam). There are a few new sites from new companies who are beginning to steal their places now. Also, many of the top sites were designed by design companies, whereas we did ours on our own, so we have direct control over changes. If I notice a keyword we rank poorly for, I can make a title change or make a new page to try and improve our ranking.

Anyway, as i said, hope these results stick!

The reason I asked is I have long been toying around with the idea Google has a mid-cycle major recalc going on.
Like penalties get handed out, PR gets recalculated etc.

Thought I saw that pattern over several months, but as of lately with that drastic everflux going on that pattern seemed to be lost.

heini - just to add a bit to your theory I noticed PR bouncing a bit on a few site yesterday between grey bar and normal PR which is something I usually see around the update...

Yes, certainly looks like a major recalculation. But our PR is steady at 5. I asked because I didn't see this before. I've only been update watching for about 6 months but normally results don't change like that, only at the start of the update. I don't see any penalised sites in our area, and how would that account for us jumping up so much. I mean, yes I've done plenty of fiddling with titles and getting more links recently but I didn't think it would have such a dramatic effect. We have been steadily climbing over the last 6 months, even dropping a few places on some updates, despite my efforts.

I think it looks like something new, so I wonder if anyone else has had a similar change...

I'm not sure if this is the case here, but for the last few months penalties were handed out right after the update.

I see this too - the first day the update started I was in 10th place for my chosen keyword on www3. A day later I wasn't in the serps at all. After it settled down I found myself in 11th. Now i'm back at 10th again!

Also, i'm seeing new results on www.google.com, and the old results on www2 and www3

Up until yesterday the top 10 results for one of our kw phrases had a PR6. Four of these sites are now PR5 and one is PR4.

Monkscuba,

Did you get a "Fresh tag" - a date stamp in your Google listing? This could be everflux, or maybe you just got freshed.

Yep. I'm seeing some of this too. Results for some of our keywords have changed since yesterday. Secondary keyword results moved from months being at position #3 up to #2. Primary keyword results remain unchanged.

The page associated with the secondary keywords has had lots of content update, mostly in early January. That page also enjoyed a PR increase at the Superbowl update.

We also took position #3 with an internal page that never showed in the results before. (no freshdate on it either) I don't exactly remember who was ahead of us, but they seem to have dropped off page one entirely.

Hmmm.....

Our PR stayed at 6. Our main competitor went from 6 to 7.

Our site on the single most common keyword is now at #1 on Google. Our competitor moved from #4 to #55.

Just to chime in that I am seeing the same.

Before yesterday, i was ranked first for a phrase, with my friend at #7

I still have #1, but also have an indented link underneath it ... and my friend jumped to #2

No fresh tag.

Now it's all back to how it was right after the update, just as I had recorded it. Could these phantom rankings be a sign of things to come? How we may rank next month? There was no fresh tag, just a big jump in rankings just for a day. Please do it again!

Now today the rankings have jumped back up again just like on the 5th, same positions. This is odd behaviour, though I'm not a google expert, I've not seen this happen on any update before. Hope it sticks this time!

And another thing, if it helps to make sense of this.

Only our site has moved. The other rankings are the same, only all those below us are now one place lower. They have not moved relative to one another at all. Only we have moved up. Possibly, my original theory holds here - some of these sites are not updated very often, whereas I'm always at it (oo-er). If their sites are staying the same, the won't move to much unless "the algo" (should be a movie title, that) changes big time.

Thanks for listening everyone. Basically just wanted to say Yippee we've got a good ranking!

Oh, and these new SERPS are also on Yahoo. Maybe this is also significant.

Goodnight and God bless Google.
