When would you guys recommend I change hosts this month. Some people have said all the SE's are out crawling at the mo, so is now a bad time?

Wait 2 weeks, change host, have the old host left for another 1-2 months, and hopefully everything should go fine.

The reason why you should have the old host for another 1-2 months, is because Google have troubles with the DNS changes and often crawl the old site, until they refresh their DNS database.

I think Google have updated their DNS in the past 36 hours or so. It'll probably be ages before they do it again!

I changed my site to a new server about 2 weeks ago, nearly every day since the only entries in the old server logs were FreshBot.... but a couple of hours ago it finally started hitting the new one. Think I've missed any deep crawl this month though. :(

I've heard that between the 15th and 20th of the month is the best time, anbody agree with this.

Doesn't seem that way to me, I was forced to move off a host on Jan 22nd but that old site was still being hit by Googlebot 8 hours ago :(
