While searching for my primary keyphrase, I was surprised to find a duplicate listing for my site! Someone's actually copied my site (one month old version) and uploaded it to some available free webspace. Interestingly, this new one's even got PR2 without any backlinks. Now what can I do to avoid any duplication penalty from Google? Please help.

Have had duplication penalty myself a few times while setting up sites on .com and .co.uk.

In the short term i created more backlinks on the .co.uk site and this one won through. Bit hit and mis though. So in theory the best place to start is to accquire links.

Secondly i would email the person that stole your content with a strongly worded email.

Good luck.

Try to report them to google/chillingeffects for copyright violation? :)

Report them to the host.

Ditto what qball said - virtually all hosts have policies against copyright violations, etc., and will often act fairly quickly if you have a well-documented situation. I was successful in getting a forum-spammer dumped from a free host by providing documentation of his posts, e-mail message headers, etc.
