I've noticed that our rankings tend to flit between page 1 under comeptitve terms to none at all, as a point of almost predictable regualrity.

I have a strong feeling that its becuase we have about 12 pages worth of content on the theme of each topic but not great PR for them.

Those days we rank well, Google seems to have SERP's that favour a bit of depth, and on the days where we dissapear, it seems PR driven.

Has anyone noticed this or am I seeing things. Is Google Algo tweaking trying to make up its mind. Any prefs anyone?

I didn't know that it was an either or proposition... I thought that if you had depth of content and good PR you would come out ahead of a site that is lacking in one area or another. If that isn't the goal... google is way off base.

have personally noticed that weightage to content in both onsite pages and backlink pages has been given a boost over the last two months.

Alright... I just reread your question and I guess you were referring to a comparison of two sites, one with content and no pr, the other with no content and good pr... sorry I misunderstood. I think as of right now, PR is of more value than content, but I think it evens out in that the amount of times a site without content is allowed to appear in the serps is limited.
