many domains

seo ideas on mutiple domains

gurus and gurettes,
i am new to the SEO world and have a question for the more seasoned players. the company i am optimizing for has about 20 + sites (all in the same line of work, different regions, different business). i was wondering if it would be better/easier to optimize one domain with all the sites in sub-directories or try to optimize all the sites as individual & distinct sites (all linking to each other). thanks.

Take it on a natural way. As if you're different domains were different books.

You might reference and source the other books when appropriate.

Then again, if it just as well fits on one domain why split it up?
