It won't hurt anything to try. I might not show any improvement until the next update, but you might still be able to catch it in time for that.

I would say it depends on the PR value of the site. With anything higher than a PR4 I have had results in changes during or directly preceding an update. Below that it didnt get any extra attention during the update and had to wait until the following month.
