I just stumbled across this research project they're doing at a few universities:

Spoken Language Information Retrieval [isip.msstate.edu]

This research will provide initial steps towards information extraction from spoken documents or from any text (such as encyclopedias), and can serve as the basis for a sorely needed sophisticated web browser technology and data mining applications.

Links to others involved are on the bottom right.

What an incredible research tool that would be, being able to search for and listen to historically significant speeches, or search to find topically important talks. They may not be on line, but they could always be submitted to be catalogued.

I think it would be a great idea, the problem I see with it would be copywrite abuse. How could they be sure they are not crossing that boundry and with as much audio (meaning music) copywrite issues right now I would think they could run into problems.
