let's say I am selling product X on my site. I have a homepage, which, among other things, features product x, (pretend this is barnes and nobles .com and the product is a book by stephen king) now it is on the front page because it is new, on sale, etc, but of course it has its own whole page dedicated to it. My question is, when I search for product X (or stephen king) the homepage ranks higher in the SERPS than the product page! (the homepage isnt high obviously , liek maybe bottom 2 or top 3, but hgiher than my product page nonetheless) the prod page is optimized, at least better than the homepage certainly! any ideas?

It's because the Page Rank of the top level domain is significantly higher than the product page. If you better optimize your product page for the keywords in question it may do better in the serps. The other obvious choice is to get other sites to deep link to the product page in question and raise it's page rank.
