linking two sites

how many links should you have

If you have two different sites, i.e very different - same topic but one an info and resources site and one a homesite for an individual, is it ok to have links between them and if so how many?

I couldn't find info on this in the google guidelines.

i would suggest to make links where it is adequate, where a link makes sense for the user of the two pages.

for example, if on you homesite a term exists which is described in detail on the other site, then link it to the other site, where it is explained.

I have the links made in two forms. One is an advert for products sold on one site relevant to the other. And also a note saying 'this site is run by joe bloggs. Click here to go to his site'

Does this sound o.k or should I take them out?

I believe linking between two sites even if done extensively (like links in all pages of the site) will not harm ...

But make it as an oneway link...and dont reciprocate...

See the link to westhost from all pages of webmasterworld...i dont think google will penalise WW for that :)

I could not find WWC as a backlink for Webhost so maybe it does not help either.

The reason you're not seeing them as backlinks is most likely that the links carry the string "?WebmasterWorld"

Not to mention all the links from here to Search Engine World. Linking between sites seems to be OK if both are offering different services or information.

The top web design company in our area, which has made sites for many of our competitors has links to their site on every page of every site they design. Still, we manage to stay above most of their sites in the rankings...I think they've never found Web Master World. Hope they don't.
