Google.ca vs google.com in traffic logs

Hmmm... My traffic log reported google.ca and google.com to be different search engines up until this month.

Here in Canada, if I attempt to go to google.com I get redirected to google.ca. I am assuming it is based on your ip address...

When I look at referrers in my traffic log, google.ca and google.com were separate referrers...now they are just google - or sometimes Yahoo/Google but that is indeed a different referrer.

Has anyone else noticed this? I preferred the old way - it gave me an idea of local traffic vs. non local traffic.

I think the redirect is based on settings in Windows that identify you as in Canada. I too am in Canada and somehow I managed to override it and end up at google.com
