Beating competitor with www.MYkeyword.com - possible?

I'm optimizing the page in my profile for the German keyword '<snip>'. I'm doing pretty well at google getting #7 for that keyword.

The problem is that I currently don't know how to beat my competitors that have domainnames like www.keyword.com - they get #1 to #6 in google.

Any suggestions?

Tons of links to your page with the keyword as anchor text.

Do you think it might help to create the subdomain keyword.mydomain.net?

I don't know what the big guys around here think about it but I think that is worth looking into. Also I see some people doing www.widgetworld/widget/widget.html. Not sure if that is helpful but seems like it is worth a try as I see lots of people with nothing pages ranking high doing that stuff.
Just a heads up but I don't think you can use the actual word you are trying to optimize for.

With greatest respect to mfishy I would suggest avoiding the route suggested.

Keyword anchor text for links is good but IMHO it is not as good as it was. :(

Putting tons of the same link on one page is madness and has been for years.

If someone reported it to a SE who then looked it could have the same effect as if Saddam posted Jpegs of his alleged "weapons of mass distruction" and included a map to assist the US and UK to find them.

My advice:

Optimise well: keep it safe and honest: gain genuine anchor text links from sites and you can easily beat keyword domains.

Creating a subdomain for the purpose of ranking is a big mistake.

hurlimann,

I am not suggesting any Google Bombing or tons of links on a single page. I am saying to get links from other sites and structure the links if possible to include your keyword.

I'm sure everyone here would agree that having anchor text links is still a HUGE factor with Google. Search allinurl on most any term for Google and many of the top sites on that keyword with have the most.

Also, for the original poster, check out Brett's 10 keys to ranking well on Google. Of course anchor text links are of the utmost importance in this list as well.

Why are subdomains bad for pagerank.
I am in travel business, i am running for every cities all around the world. it is hard to get backlinks for every cities. So i think that i have to show them as different websites by subdomains.

what do you suggest?
is it better to use www.domain.com/widgets instead of widgets.domain.com

thanks

Aplologies mfishy: misread your post: too much beer I fear.

I am noticing a loss of benifit in keyword anchor text.

Still good but not as good as before.
