Hey all...
Well it is time to site down and work on getting a new batch of links, time to build this site up some more. I run a several thousand page commercial site in a rather competitive industry. I have yahoo, dmoz, and some other directory links as well as affiliate links but affiliate links do not do much good as they have time out sessions in them for tracking orders from the affiliates.

Basically, where can I find directories who will give me links? Anyone have any ideas on how I can go about scooping up a nice bunch of links for a commercial site?

Thanks for any help you guys can provide...

Chris

The directories worth mentioning beyond Yahoo and DMOZ aren't much in most cases. Got a cousin perhaps with a PR8 personal homepage? ;)

do a search for "your industry add url"

This quite often brings up a list of topical directories that are related to your industry.

what I also do is go to the yahoo and dmoz categories where they list web directories and search engines. Add your site to them all manualy.

I dont think PR an a algo component will fade away, I think it may be made less public. I think one of the bigest mistakes google made was alowing people to view page rank. In effect this has almost created a new online curency with sites paying for links related to the linking pages, page rank. If PR was just a part of the algo that sat quitly in the background there would be a lot less attention brought to it.

And then how would the public know what the "important" pages are, mack? And, the common man like nifty colored thingies that change value on his browser, even if he really doesn't understand what they mean. ;)

Does the average surfer even have the tool bar , let alone advanced features and if so do they know what it means?

Have to say I have never seen the tool bar with advanced features installed on anyones computer. A few friends have the yahoo companion bar I always find that peopel dont even know what google is let alone the toolbar. Am I alone with these observations?

Another point, when you mention the importance of a page, the tool bar only looks at a page roma PR perspective. Surely the user woudl rather judge a pages importance by it's positioning within the results. Because the PR gauge gives the impression that high pr will always rank higher that lower PR. We know this is not always the case.

Duuno what percentage of surfers have the toolbar. However, remember Google *wants* to encourage users to download the toolbar, so they'll search with Google. That PageRank indicator gives people more reason to want to have the Google toolbar. Although I've wondered how many people who surf to my sites that have a PR5 just thinks that means they are only half good and just marginally important...

Question: is that PR feature on by default or not?

There was a good discussion several months ago on Finding Directories to be Listed In [webmasterworld.com].

Rank in SERPs just indicates the relevance of that that page to the specific search term. PR = important *overall*. As in, microsoft.com is as important as it gets in this world (along with the PR10 Google), and my sites down at PR5 just are in a much, much more minor league.
