To avoid duplicate content....

Will the following be duplicate content?

There are three companies (A, B and C) that are all related not only in ownership, but in the service they provide as well. They each have their own domain name and hosting account. The way the site is to be set up is to have one page that looks the same and reads the same as the index page for each company (no way around it). So, if I typed (a.com) or (b.com) I would get a similar page. To avoid duplicate content, can I change the wording a tiny amount or rearange the links on each page? Will this help? After the index page, most pages will be a little different for each company. Each site will be linked to each other as well. Thanks for your input. -Blue

The fact that each site is "linked to each other" makes it more likely that Google will pick up the similarity.

In this case I use a rule of thumb yardstck that the pages (perticularly the body text) needs to be at least 20% different from each other.

There is no measurement tool, just good judgement.

Does anyone else have any idea of how much the content needs to differ on each page to avoid duplicate content?
