I am thinking of moving some pages from a sub-directory to one level up. These pages has homepage - 2 PR. I am hoping if I move them one level up, I might get an extra PR. Is it the right thing to do? What should be the best approach for dealing with Googlebot when I move these pages? Cannot do .htaccess because I have no access to the server. Pages are in ASP and dynamic. Any help would be appreciated.

Getting back to the original point (or at least another aspect of it...):

If you move your files around, those that are indexed will return errors when searched for and clicked on until google updates your listings.

Be sure to have a custom 404 in place to keep hold of that traffic for the time period in between.

JOAT :)

steveb: it was a joke. I only didn't know how to make those yellow-head smileys. :) ;)

annej: I'm sorry, it wasn't clear enough. It wasn't meant to be serious. :)

daamsie: I was sure that the PR of my pages and directories
must be guessed because they were brand new.

Feel free to question me taxpod! Last time I checked, I didn't get the proper PR with '?'.

Because PR often does reduce by 1 for each '/', I'll need to look for a good test. One thing I can see is that on my Toolbar the 'Category' button still follows the Toolbar 'guesss'.

> A guessed PR in my experience is exclusively a page that isn't in the database. So if a page isn't in the database, what difference does the PR in the toolbar make?

None, but sometimes the Toolbar doesn't show wven when there is PR (eg. unknown 'filetype's).

Ok guys I'm taking all your points on board....

But it doesn't change what i see.

I can load my index page at domain.ext no problem and it hads a pr of 8.

My root folder though is set on the server at domain.ext/.../.../pages.asp and below. And any clicks off the home page to other pages within the site, automtically to to the folders within the root folder, 2 tiers down.

Many of the pages are all linked to from the home page (both cat index pages and some subpages) which has a PR of 8, by way of the nav bar and links within the page content on the home page,

Yet the PR for those pages immediately drops down to 5, when i move one click away from the PR8 homepage.

How can this be?

The PR passed is entirely dependent upon how many links there are on the page.

Cut the number of links in half and you'll pass on more PR.

Triple the links on the page and you'll see the PR transfer decline.
