I have a client whose site is a .co.in domain. (.in stands for India) My question is - does the .com domain gets priority over the .co.in urls?

suppose there are two sites travelindia.com and travelindia.co.in If there is a search query "travel india" , assuming that both the sites are equally optimized and similar site linking to them , will the .com domain get a higher rank in the search engine results?

In such a case, what is advisable to the client? a new .com domain or is it possible to achieve similar top search engine postions with the .co.in site.

Top level domains are all treated the same. Thus, the answer is no.

TLD's are all treated equally by Google.com. I recently registered a bunch of .US domains and they are all being treated fine by Google.

However, if the site maybe important to other local search engines then taking the local TLD maybe advantageous. I know squat about India, but certainly for many European sites having a local TLD is advantageous. A number of well used European SE's will give preferance to TLD's from the country of origin. :)
