How Can They Get Away With It?

Site crosslinking to the max!

From what I've read recently it appears crosslinking is no big deal anymore and it hasn't since I've been following these boards for two months now. There is a site that is closely related in nature to mine that has twelve other very similar sites that clog the first two pages in the google search when using similar keywords.

Isn't there a limit to something like this? It's been that way for a few months now and they continue to crank out newer sites that clog it even more. Anybody?

Happy New Year!

"SPAM is in the eye of the beholder" No.. search engine SPAM is what the SEs and Directories define it to be.

Well Brett if you havent seen a good doorway page I can send you some, the ones that have been niggling me are still there since our last conversation last update and look like they are going to be around for 4 updates. How can you win if you play straight. The real neat thing now is these doorway pages are putting crappy SER's at number.1 in FAST as well, just to ice the cake.

darnbarn
>>Google doesn't even take care of the legitimate spam
>>complaints very often, why would you think that anyone
>>with nothing to hide could be hurt by this.

look at the complaints of pr0 penalties - most of those affected think they've done nothing wrong. maybe they have, maybe they haven't. either way, the boot hurts and it hurts bad.

>>Are you implying both, that reporting is a waste of time,

no, just your time can be better spent on your own site. any time you consider to be spare time that you could use to report a cheat could equally be spent working on your own site.

>>and that these sites will eventually fall because of what
>>they have done,

most of the time, yes

>>that google won't want to manually deal with these spam
>>complaints,

yes - google don't employ hundreds of staff to calculate pagerank manually or to update the databases manually so why would they want to do spam filtering manually when they can automate it?

>>but that they would remove a perfectly legitimate site?

no, i doubt if google would do that, but dmoz or yahoo editors might

>>and then explained that even if you're clean, your
>>competitors "can remove the competition without doing any
>>real work"

no, i said if you teach your competitors how to remove a cheat, they might just use the same methods on you. they might succeed, the might not. who's to say? can you afford the risk?

>>So let me get this straight, it may be a waste of my time
>>to report them, I should spend my time developing content
>>on my one website.

almost correct - only you can decide whether to spend your time reporting a competitor or whether to build up your site. the choice is yours.

>>If I decide to waste my time and put together a report of
>>their multiple cross linking scheme, google probably
>>won't do anything about it anyway, but, my competitors
>>can have me removed without doing any work, even if I'm
>>totally complying with all of the rules.

stop trolling - go back and read my message again.

Is the dark side of the web considered affiliate sites as well as the obvious?
The people that post here are more advanced in the workings of the web that I am. But hair on peoples neck start to stand up when spam is mentioned like it really is not happening and no one wants to get involved.I disagree (please just my humble opinion)
It may not be as wide spread in your areas as the ones I am involved in,and no I not jealous and all that crap, but I also like a level playing field and consistency in the strike zone.Win or loose by the rules.
Some post seem to indicate leave well enough along build solid content driven sites, with no spam. I agree thats what I strive to do.That is the only way I want to do it straight up.
So the question is when a search shows up the same site in the first 33 of 34 results with different URLs and same content in Google.
What would be considered by the board the proper way to respond?
Please dont just say report it,be a little more orginal.
How long should you wait to see if it goes away. A month,two,6 months maybe a year.

bsand - by all means report it if you feel it is unfair and will help your cause, but as soon as you've reported it, get back to working on your site.

it's a long time since i've seen google SERPs with 33 out of 34 results being same site / content. i'd appreciate it if you and others could sticky me with a couple of search terms that produce this and i'll tell you what i'd do (note that what i would choose to do may not be the best thing and may not help and may not be the same as other members here would do, it would just be my opinion).

I wanted to say that I'm surprised with all the the poeple aho have an interest in ridding the search engines of spam and I think it's great. I also wanted to say that I think that something is wrong with not allowing people to openly discuss topic related to spam,on this board. It seems that almost all of the threads that even dare bring up spam get locked, I even personally know of a member being removed because they commented that they thought they were treated rudely and called disrespectfull names, simple because they wanted to debate these issues. Hmmm. I seem to remember many people saying that they didn't like it when an entity blocked them or removed them without any type of communication.

What is the boards position on this. Is it ok for people to call other people names, simply because of a topic that they find interesting? or is it that people are not allowed to say that they feel offended by other people calling them nasty names.

?
