Googles Success came from Techies?

Do you think Googles success came from Techies?

I remember back in '97 or '98 when I first came across google. The one thing I remember most about it was that it was not filled with commercial garbage. This was very appealing to me as a Techie, and many of my Techie friends. I feel that most Techies in the world felt the same way, and introduced Google to friends and family which eventually spread like wild - fire. What do you think?

Gizmare, I'm 100% with you there. Like many others I went from Gopher to Veronica, then Yahoo!, then AltaVista, then Google. In the early days, we geeks were the people showing folk that they could switch to a leaner, smarter engine.

Google quickly became the techie's engine of choice; yet PageRank, default 'AND' search and default proximity weighting made it ideal for non-expert searchers too. That wide appeal is key, IMO.

Google is a case study in Quirkology and branding.

Their pages are so low key, that the only thing that jumps out at you that the eye can naturally rest on, is the name. They burn it into your brain on each and every page - including their copy of your page.

That's why I thought the "tab" menu system they are using was counter productive. The darkness of the tab line blows away the eye magnet effect of the logo.
