But here's my new question. I have about five indexes, each dealing with different subjects, each ludicrously optimized and each supported by around ten subsidiary pages, with anchored links etc.
So, does anybody have views as to whether the filenames of the subsidiary pages (a level down) have any bearing on the score for the index page? If not, I'm kind of inclined to use those valuable filenames to go hunting elsewhere. On the other hand, I have repetitive strain injury, and whilst Google and Fast are very forgiving of those of us who keep changing stuff, Alta Vista isn't.
eg: index= mydomain.com/red-widgets.htm
subsidiary=mydomain.com/widgets-joe.htm
=mydomain.com/widgets-bob.htm
Do my subsidiary widgets filenames help my index in the widgets war, or not? Or should I get a life?
Here's what I think, and it's only what I think.
Any part of a keyword phrase in the url of the page helps *that page* in the SERPs. So, if you can put keywords anywhere along here, it helps (some say to a greater or lesser degree as to where it actually appears):
domain-name.com/directory-name/page-name.htm
Does "blue-widgets.htm" as a one level down page name help the main page? If the subsidiary page links to the main page I think it might (but always best if the anchor text include "blue-widgets."
We've all seen quite a few of these "Why does this page with nothing on it rank above mine in the SERPs?" It's only an observation of mine but If you look closely at some of these weird pages the few backlinks they have come from pages with the *keyword in the url*, *keyword in the page title* and *keyword in the link text*.
Is Google giving these links more weight in the algo? It looks suspiciously like it might.
As for Alta Vista not liking change, go with whomever brought you to the dance. If AV delivers your traffic, don't fool around too much. If you think you can significantly increase your Google and Fast traffic, go for it.
Just my 2 cents plain,
Jim
