I looked at 50 or 60 auto dealer web sites in the US and then 50 or 60 in Canada. In the US most had a PR between 0 and 3.

In Canada they all had a PR of 5.

Why? Any thoughts?

Canada is a very web savy country, I think we lead the world in percentage of broadband useage. If you look at the cost of broadband especially factoring in the US exchange rate you'd see why.

Cable Internet Access ~ 40
ADSL ~ 40

Thats like $20 dollars a month US.

So a lot of people surf the web a lot, I mean what else are you going to do in Saskatchewan in the winter? ;-) With all the surfing it stands to reason some people build a webpage or two.

I agree. The winter here in the north makes for heavy surfing habits.

so by this logic we should rule the SERPs for hockey, beer, and.... what's that other stereotype? oh ya, bacon.

basically, it's doubtful there is any correlation between page ranks and country hosting... it's a fluke.

of course, hosting your site in Canada is no harder for an American than a Canadian I bet.

As a Canadian who was worked on optimizing websites for a few years I can tell you a .ca has no advantages or disadvantages.

It is more likely that in the case of auto dealers, Canadians were first to the game and they have more incoming links.

I am real tempted to take some cheap shots at my American friends and competitors but I will refrain in the interest of international goodwill. Plus the US is a much better armed.

Is it possible that all these Canadian auto dealers are listed on a directory page with a high PR somewhere? This would explain it. Also, note that when it comes to competitors, it isn't how high your PR is, but how high your PR is compared to your competition. Thus, PR3 can be good if competing sites are PR1 or PR2.

Maybe it has something to do with the exchange rate. A Canadian PR6 = an American PR3 :)
