Say hi to bill, I'm new :)

I've been lurking since one of my buddies said "hey, these guys seem to know what pagerank is all about". That was some time ago.

So, now a few weeks into things, I've tweaked an retweaked a bunch of things on my new site. I've added a bunch of pages, broken up my FAQ so that I have more overall rich content pages, and abandoned some ideas I had that now seem archaic.

One I'm considering dropping is having my logo broken up into about 20 pics, each with an alt first with description, then kw1, kw2, etc. Each is linked to index.jsp.

Now that I am considering the importance of pagerank (every page with that header is now giving 8 votes to index, which isnt bqad, but may be a bad way of doing it), and seeing that google might indeed penalize for something like this, I am considering dropping that technique.

Any ideas?

What you're proposing would be irritating to someone surfing with images turned off, and totally crazy-making for anyone accessing your page through an audible browser reader. The additional code clutter would also cause slower page loads. In my experience, it is wiser to look for ways to reduce code clutter, not increase it (for multiple reasons).

I'm not sure that having multiple links from one page to another confers any additional benefit after the first link's "vote".

I wouldn't do it unless chopping your logo up makes sense for design or optimization of the graphic file size, although the code to stick the 20 pieces together probably bloats the page load speed. I think you are better off writting more unique content on the page with your keywords incorporated.

of all the places to have a typo...

its broken into about 10, not 20 pieces, and yes, it certainly would make it hard for someone with images off, and a text reader... well, they are having issues too.

<sarcasm>luckily, this site has to do with botox injections, so it may not be for those not interested in appearance (images turned off) or those who are blind... </sarcasm>

I'm really still concerned about the SEO effects of this. It is a nice way to get some keyworded images on the page, right at the top. the htm bloat is really negligable. I doubt it would add a half second more on a 56k dl... yet I garner a bunch of keyworded links.

and yes, it does help with image optmization. It would have been broken up into 4 sections, and those would have been treated the same... alt=meta desc, alt=kw1, alt= kw2.

Okay, I'll say it: Hi to bill, I'm new.

Welcome. There's been a few recent threads on alt tags and it looks like the consensus is that they help/count somewhat as far as keyword density on a page.

Would they help or be counted in an img link? IMO not for the page you are linking to.

Should you have 20 img links on one page pointing to your index page? Unless you can justify having those same as 20 text links, most probably not. It appears to be most commonly accepted that one page linking to another equals one "vote."

Using that number of links from one page to your index page will affect a variety of factors, keyword density, html to text ratio, which I'm sure other folks will address more effectively than I can. Best bet for a link to index from an internal page is a text link such as "Keyword Home" or some such variation.
