Is Google particularly active recently?

Maybe a christmas present for everyone ...

Perhaps I am a bit of a google-hypochondriac but it seems as though I am getting hit quite a bit by googlebot, much more so than normal. Has anyone else observed this or am I just goofy?

Has google ever done their December update before Christmas?

Our main site seems to get crawled a bit earlier than the others and Googlebot started eating up pages late on the 10th and finished last night. Might be a day or two early but I'm sure the bot is looking forward to a holiday and warming up before a fire after being out and about for a couple of weeks.

The Google Update History [webmasterworld.com] shows it on the 19th in 2000 and the 27th last year. Ya' never know!

Same experience for me. I noticed Googlebot deepcrawled me for the second time this month. Only difference is that it picked up new pages and not the bulk which it got the first time around 12/3 12/4 or so.

So my theory is this - Google is doing some extra deep crawling closer to the update with the idea that the next one will be well after the holidays towards the end of January?

I'd say normal procedure, googlebot is always busy just about 2 weeks after update, the middle month deep crawl I call it. It has nothing to do with the monthly update.

In the November, 2002 update thread, GoogleGuy dropped by and gave one hint:

"Sounds like we've been following a holiday theme lately (with Halloween and Thanksgiving). Just don't expect us to be working on Christmas Eve. Even googlers and their thousands of machines have to take a break sometime."

At first I thought he was implying no December update (so the machines can take a break) but then realized maybe just no update on Christmas eve or Christmas Day. Who knows. LOL

Googlebot has been deep crawling my site lately and new pages I've just put up are already in the index. Sure didn't expect that to happen until the next update.

We have been getting a tremendous amount of traffic from the Googlebot lately. I think with the launch of Froogle we got our answer why.

My guess is that it is all automated. Thus, they could push a button on Christmas Eve, and the computers do their stuff. Unless nobody at Google celebrates Thanksgiving, the holiday didn't stop the update.
