I have been silently observing the forums for a long time now.
My site had a High PR6 last month. This month after i added more links to my inner pages (from my main page) my PR has reduced to PR4.
Does this mean that larger number of links to inner pages reduces my main page PR.
I believe this could have been answered somewhere, but, could not find it.
Has anyone encountered this?
PS: i have not made any other changes, & incoming links are also same as last month.
Thank You.
People talk about "leaking PR", but they're taking a site-wide view. Links on the same page each get a fraction of that page's total PR as a weight for their "vote" - and the more links there are, the smaller that fraction becomes.
So having outbound links on a page with other, in-site links will mean a smaller fraction -- less weight for that PR "vote" distributed by your in-site links.
Now, if one of your internal pages has a high PR, and it links to your Home Page -- and then you add other links to that internal page, it would be sending a smaller PR vote to your Home Page. But it's not common for an internal page to be a major factor in the PR of a Home Page, unless you have LOTS of inbound links to that internal page.
The PageRank of virtually all Google-indexed pages on the net are in constant flux: New pages are added, old pages die out, more links are added to link-pages thus diminishing the value of your incoming links.
And not just YOUR incoming links, but the incoming links of those who are linking to you, and so on back down the line.
The PR "votes" are usually in a state of decay. Their PR value is recalculated and is usually diminshed by a little with every update. This is where it starts to hurt, because you then must keep your inbounds in a constant state of growth, depending on the quality of your inbound links, in order to combat Link Rot.
OK, i understood the logic for 'Link Rot'.
Now my query is:
Another site of mine has PR6 with only 1 link to inner page that ie, the "Enter", link.
Now i plan to add approx 10-12 links from my homepage to inner pages, ie, create 10-12 new inner pages.
My reason for starting this thread was, would my PR (for main page)reduce if i have 10-12 links to my inner pages from here.
Thankx.
No, and more pages in your site is good for internal pr and loads of other reasons. The only negative effect is that each link from your main page will share the amount of pr that can be transferred to other pages. This will mean that each internal page may loose a slight amount of pr, however, this will be compensated by the pr returning from your new pages to your main page.
On balance, if your new pages can be spidered, you will benefit. The max. links from one page is 100.
When you think of a page's PR as showing how likely it is that a random walk of the web will find that particular page -- then you can see that a large jump in total pages will tend to slide everyone's PR downward.
