repeating keywords in title

i always thought repeating keywords in the title of the page was spammy..but looking at a competitive search term..8 of the first ten sites have repeated the 2 keywords twice in the title....the top 2 sites have fewer links then the next two..but they have the keyword repeated..is this now the way to go?

One of my websites has always had a title like this on its homepage: keyword1 filterword keyword2, keyword2 filterword keyword1.

This title was chosen for literary reasons, not for seo'ing. The page has always been doing well on both keywords.

Be careful. My title is quite natural. If your title looks spammy and you're in a competitive field, someone may report you.

anyway..googleguy said that when they get a spam report through they look at making filters to counter it rather than hand check and boot sites!

So you'll change yours to be like theirs and report them for doing what you'll now be doing?

I'm not quite sure of the purpose for copying it if it's "spam". Is it the repetition in the title that's helping them to rank? How is your site ranking relative to theirs, position wise, without your title being like that? The title is only just worth so much - how far behind them is your site now?

nope....i didnt change my title in the end..and im not reporting them...it was joke..:-)..they are 1 and 2 for a highly competitive 2 word phrase..i am number 4...i will carry on doing what ive been doing..getting on topic links and trying to add unique content while building a large well structured site.... from when i first started on these forums i have been hearing that you should not worry about what may appear to be spam or tricks that work for a time now but in the future who knows..you should concentrate on making your site strong on its own merits and be in there for the long haul..i believe that to be true and will carry on with that aim..i was surprised to see that repeated keywords within just 65 charactres worked so well....but then they are missing out on a couple of other words that i can use and they cant..cause they are plum out of carachters...what a shame..:-)

I don't think repeating a keyword phrase twice in a title is spammy, for example, "Blue Widgets World - 101 Blue Widgets."

Now, the real question is would it rank better in Google with "blue widgets" once or twice in the title? I don't think it makes much, if any, difference but I'm open to suggestions.
