Will google penalize your site if you have a snippet of javascript that sets a cookie and then redirects the user to the SAME page, if the cookie is set the page loads normally, or does google completely ignore javascript? Will google in the future learn to read javascript and index based on its contents?

Google at this moment doesn't read JavaScript to my extent.

They might do in the future, even though it would probably not work very good.

It's been said that they read JavaScript drop-down menues, but that's due to the <option> tag.
