Hi,

Last month I added a link from a high PR site and the next day my ranking went from 50 to 5 on a popular keyword. I know the fresh bot picks up new content and adjust search rankings, but has anyone else noticed that new links can help to?

Of course they won't count for PR or show until next update.

Thanks

Are you sure that's all that changed from one day to the other?

Was that page considered Fresh before the added link?

Yes, the page was definitely considered fresh before the link, updated daily. That's what's so strange. The link was from a PR 9 page but I thought it was only content changes that mattered for fresh. I do make minor changes to the page but it seems like a huge coincidence to jump that high the day after the PR 9 link.

Anyone else have any evidence of new links effecting fresh position?

first of all congratulations with your PR9 link, that would be one of my continous day-dreams.

Your observation of immediate rank improvement from a high Pageranked link I only saw once for one day.

Hello, astoller

Google does two types of crawls. The main crawl is used to create the search results that get updated at the end of the month, when all the results are updated.

There is also a fresh crawl, a separate crawler that visits some sites to provide new results between the monthly updates. You can tell if your site has been visited by the fresh crawler if the results you see in Google have a date displayed below them.

In this case, mfishy indicated that the results he saw were from a fresh crawl, as opposed to the regular monthly crawl.
