Why bother updating pages?

I updated my website a few days before the new google dance started. Google picked up my new pages OK, and they all showed up during the dance. Checked my site today and all the new pages I had added since the last dance had gone.

What I can't understand is why google is showing my titles from pages I changed 6 weeks ago, and the cache is 2 months old. Anyone got any ideas why this happens?

Thanks in advance

Welcome to Webmasterworld Badger.

What you may be seeing is the "Everflux" effect where google shuffles pages in and out of the database in preparation for the next update.

In the mean time get quality links, and work on content.

It will happen, just takes time.

Maybe the freshbot picked up the new pages in later Nov, but then they disappeared with the new db a few days ago. If that is the case, they will probably be picked up again by the freshbot during Dec. and they will be found by the deepcrawl active just now, so they will be in the main database in Jan.

Thanks for the welcome and replies.

Having read most of the posts on this forum, it still brings me back to my subject title. Am I right in thinking google will only index (in the next dance) the pages that googlebot crawled at the start of the month, If that is the case, then why bother updating till a few days before the next dance? Or am I missing something here?

You are right in your thinking. You need to have pages at the beginning of the month if you want them in next update.

New pages updated during the month get a nice boost for a few days before dropping off before the next monthly update, usually ranking way above where they will eventually end up next month. They have to be linked from one of your pages that gets the daily fresh treatment. For many time-dependent pages like news, seasonal (eg christmas!), events a fresh listing can be highly useful even if it is for a few days. So yes, it is useful to update pages in some situations.

I have pages I updated yesterday present in the index, so it pays of to update during the month. If google likes your site, the freshbot will come around daily for a cup of tea :) and the fresh pages will appear high on the serps, because they are fresh.

If you have larger changes or additions, make sure you put them online no later than during the dance, because the next deepcrawl will start immediately after the dance, and you want your new stuff ready then.
