How does Google find sites

For sometime I've been considering different marketing avenues for one of my sites and last month set up a mirror site on a new domain for a national magazine.

I was checking some keywords on Google today and found my (SE) site in the top 3 but I was amazed to see at 12th place my magazine site. The site has no links pointing to it and has never been submitted to any SE's/Directories!

So I've just added User-Agent: googlebot Disallow: / in robot.txt In the hope that I can stop google crawling the site so that I can get a true idea whether the magazine is worth running with, also I don't want to get my site banned for having a mirror URL.

Both sites are hosted with different compaines as well

Very Odd, any thoughts

Do you use the toolbar, I think googleguy once said in a post a while back there were loads of ways the spiders find sites, and that was one of them

Does the sun come up in the morning :)

To be honest I never even checked the site once it went up on this PC and the first time I looked at it was today, when I clicked on the SERP's on G, trying to work out who the site was until I realised it was my domain LOL :) as I was shocked to see it
