I recently uploaded a brand new site to google. I have 1 reciprocal link in place from a PR 5 site and just submitted to DMOZ. Googlebot visited my index page about 2 hours after it going live (I did submit my URL to googles add_url page too).

I guess I am looking at end of Jan for a firm listing in the SERPS. What is the general time span for getting a puka listing. I assume I should get an "in and out" fresh listing sometime soon since the googlebot blessed me with his presence.

Now, building my recip links. Should I bother getting links from sites that are relative but less that 4? Is it worth the time getting these links? I hear google does not take them into consideration as back links and so would just be PR drain. I have successfuly built another site up to a PR 6 (went live at the end of August just missing the dance). Got to PR 4 (default I believe) in Sept dance and increased by 1 for each dance since. I have a lot more quality content on my new site and a lot more thought has gone into the design and navigation so I am hoping this will give me some good SERPS on the new site.

The other site is enjoying a load of hits since the November dance and am enjoying first page exposure for my targeted keywords which is amazing since I was a total SEO virgin till I came here in late Sept.

I would like to thank all the guys and gals here who make this place what it is. Id still be in the google basement if it wasnt for you people so a big thank you. And a great big thank you to googlebot for being such a friendy beast in my early days of SEO:) Bless him. Just hope he likes the taste of my new meaty content and has not gone veggie on me.

Yes, they can definitely be worthwhile, particularly if you are starting from a low PR yourself. Take a careful look at the page - how many outgoing links are there? Fewer may indicate that the links page and/or site is new and getting in early could see you with a link secured on what will become a nice PR page.

Google DOES take them into consideration when calculating PR, it just doesn't show them in the list of backlinks when you check. (I suspect because it would make the calculation of PR transfer too transparent).
