Does googlebot crawl and index foreign language pages automatically or you have to take certain steps?
For example, my domain name has two pages index_english.html and index_french.html but they are under same domain name. Will google index both in the appropriate language?

If you have link on your English homepage to the French (or other) language homepage, Google will go to the French page. It will see that it is in French, it is not a big thing: If looks for certain words that are typicalfor one language, but rare in all others.
