Google tracking outbound traffic

Has anyone noticed Google tracking out bound traffic on their core results?
I have just noticed their serps have a tracking system in place for each listing. Is this new?

Well, whaddya know. I just did some more searching and the tracking links are gone....
Luckily I remember what the tracking code looked like. Went something like:
[google.com...]

I guess the "start" variable means the rank. obvoiously "q" is the url to redirect to....dunno what "sa" means tho...

I believe there was once mention made. I think it's done once in a while, just temporarily.

keeper I can't find the post but Brett mentioned this recently and Googleguy responded, saying it's something they do sporadically and use it as a research tool.
