Unwanted links, what to do

Google have said that your competition can't get you into trouble by submitting you to link farms, setting up doorway pages et all- but how can they tell if you did it or if a competitor did it?

I got an email saying that a competitor had put a link to us on their links page and they would like us to reciprocate. I took a look at the site and the links page and everything is PR 0... I emailed and politely said that we don't participate in link exchanges of this kind and asked them to remove our site from their links page (which has over 200 spammy links on one page). They haven't done anything about it but I can't press the issue because, in the end, how is it illegal to link to someone?

Am I just being paranoid or do I have a real cause for concern?

I wouldnt worry about it.

You cant penalised for one bad egg linking to you.

If you really want the link removed, resend the request after a week or two.

Don't worry about it.

If Google ever starts penalizing sites because of who links to them you will be seeing Google doing the biggest flameout then crash-and-burn in the history of SE's. It would be suicide for their relevency.

I just recently started receiving referrals from a porn webmaster board, I wasn't going to worry about it since I've always heard that no other site can get you in trouble.

This is what I have always heard as well. But Google also penalises link farms and there are, certainly, bad neighborhoods, on the web. How can Google make the distinction? What's there to stop a webmaster from submitting his competitor to a known link farm?

I guess that maybe I'm being paranoid.

link farms do it intentionally and on a larger scale.

Just make sure you don't link back.

Yes. Don't link back to bad neighnorhoods and that can get you in trouble with Google .. and not the other way around to the best of my knowledge
