Why this Googlebot activity?

As a new user of this Forum - I've only been visiting in the last few weeks - I could do with some help with understanding Googlebot's visit to my small website which I launched two month's ago. If all the images and html pages are added up I have a hit potential of circa 60.
Shortly after the Dance Googlebot visits every other day but starts early in the month with about 25 hits. This rises steadily until yesterday the hits had got to 160.
What's going on? Why this level of hits?
I only have circa 20 inward links.The site is currently PR5 and my weblog is pretty basic. Thanks in advance for some enlightenment.

I would say what you are seeing is Google Updates and Everflux, the Monthly Mid-Cycle Changes [webmasterworld.com]

Thanks for the info.
But does the increased activity have any relationship to the number of inward links or the number of pages changes?
Do all websites get the same rise in activity throughout the month?

But yes it's a combination of inbound links and content changing.

It's easier to get a "fresh tag" if you content change often.

And it's easier to get the more inbound links you have.

And no all sites don't get the "fresh tag", it used to be around 3 million, now it's a lot more.

As advised I have been to the info on Everflux; but it still doesn't explain why my site has now received total hits from freshbot 3.25 x the total number of GIF's JPEG's and HTML files on the site, having started about 14 days ago with 0.5 times.
Am I seeing Freshbot coming for different indexes, the tempo increasing as the date for the Dance comes nearer?
Can anybody throw light on this change of pace?
Oh yes! I don't know whether this has any bearing on the situation: Freshbot came yesterday but no date stamp has appeared on the page.
