I'm trying to get a site included in google and i just had a visit from this :Googlebot/2.1 (+http://www.googlebot.com/bot.html)

Anybody have an idea what this might mean?

Is it a primary check on the site?

Welcome to WebmasterWorld! If that was the first gbot visit, you probably won't get into the index until the end of December. Patience is a virtue;)

<added>Get as many good incoming links as you can before the end of this month and you Google debut will most likely be pleasing</added>

Welcome to WebmasterWorld duelism.
A visit by any Google robot means they know you are there and providing everything in your site is OK, you will get indexed at the next update or the one after.

One big clue is how much of your site was spidered. If it was only the home page, you may have been added to the inventory for future spidering expeditions. If a number of pages were retrieved you may be added at the next update. More realisticaly at this time of the month it is likely to be the December update befor your inclusion.

Piskie,
Do you know how often the updates are generally?

Welcome to WW, duelism.

You've arrived just in time to watch the big monthly show when everyone is running around yelling: "Has it begun, has it begun?"

Do you know how often the updates are generally?

Once a month. You can tell when the update starts by comparing results from the different Google urls:

www.google.com
www2.google.com
www3.google.com

Or, like troels_nybo_nielsen said, just check in here and you will know immediately.
