would adding the google search appliance to our website help with our google ranking. I was thinking that adding the google search feature would encourage linking to our website.

I guess it could be possible that adding a good search system could cause more people to link to your site, which in return would have an impact on your ranking, but there is no direct boost for buying a Google box.

Has any member here fooled around with the search appliance on their intranet?

If so, care to share some experiences?

(please feel free to sticky me all the on-page ranking factors )

It's always the first impulse to find a "shortcut" for improving rankings. However, Google's emphasis is on relevance.

Your seo efforts will have a greater effect if directed toward studying serps and understanding why sites are ranking. Energies are wasted (in my opinion) dreaming up shortcuts like:

Multiple description meta tags on every page.
Excessive alt tags
Multiple unlinked index pages at root (index4.html, index3.html, index2.html)
meta robots "follow, index"

And many other aberrations and superstitions to be found... The eye should be kept on relevance, because that's what Google is after.

If it were possible to swab chicken blood on a web site and invoke the god thereby, you can bet people would be out there swabbing chicken blood.
