It was nice to see Google recognize the Canadian Remembrace Day with a poppy where the first "o" is. It is the first time I can remember Google recognizing a Canadian holiday.

I am sure all Canadians appreciate this kind gesture from Google.

Pass our thank you around your office GG.

Remember something about a logo with a moose on it before.... could that have anywhere but Canada?

I see the same logo is on google.co.uk -- maybe this could be recycled in Australia and New Zealand for Anzac Day :)

just found it. Canada Day. June 31.

Is that a celebration of independence?

Remembrance day is Nov 11, the day World War One ended and the day we remember the sacrifice of our soldiers.

In this part of the world it's called Armistice Day, and it marks the end of World War 1 at 11:00 am on 11/11

Someone else just told me they did something for Canada Day, which is July 1. Sort of our independance day but keep in mind we are still a Constitutional Monarchy, so not completely independant.

The poppy represents Flanders Fields in France and comes from the poem "In Flanders Field" by John McCrea.

Here in Poland it's Independence Day, also remembering the end of World War I, when we regained independence after about 200 years of foreign rule.

In the US this is called "Veteran's Day". The poppy symbolism means nothing in the US, but the holiday itself is recognized.

The poppy symbolism means nothing in the US

"The VFW was the first veterans' organization to adopt the poppy and develop a national distribution campaign. For more than 75 years, the VFW's Buddy Poppy program has raised millions of dollars in support of veterans' welfare and the well being of their dependents. From the very beginning, Buddy Poppy has received the support of the Veterans Administration and the endorsement and cooperation of all presidents since Warren G. Harding."

VFW Buddy Poppy [vfw.org]

"The VFW conducted its first poppy sale before Memorial Day in 1922 becoming the first veterans' organization to organize a nationwide distribution. The poppy soon was adopted as the official memorial flower of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States."

And, please note that Google chose not to use that poppy logo for US users for a reason: in 2002, few would recognize the significance today. Google probably didn't want to have to answer a lot of e-mails about whether the staff had gone on an opium binge. ;)
