start=20 in search string

Is measuring this worth anything

It seems it would be an easy thing to measure how often a page shows up on the first page of Google results simply by dividing the amount of Google referrals by the amount of times 'start=' shows up in a Google referrer string in raw logs. I'm interested in knowing if this is a valuable statistic in marketing sites or abilities. Our site has gone from 107 Google referrals with 19% not on the first page in August (our busiest month) to 47 Google referrals with 9% not on the first page in the first eight days of November (our second slowest month). In general, most of the gains are in our most profitable category, which I know is important. I'm interested in knowing if the percetage of results on the front page is good, or if it means I could be missing out on opportunities.
I think if I had to sum it up in one question:
Is there a threshhold percentage of first page results that may be indicative of focusing too much on too few keywords?

I look at this all the time. I'm not certain on the "value" of it as it pertains to your question, but I find it useful - especially if it's a term that's popular.

SIDENOTE: You can do the same thing with your Yahoo results by checking the "b=". It goes by result numbers not pages, though.
