Geocities has a PR of 8.
My main website is all about, say, picasso paintings.
I will -
1) Sign up for Geocities and create TEN websites on paintings (all with different content)
2) Wait for atleast 3 months during which Google will crawl my geocities pages and assign PR to all my ten websites.
(I have noticed that all three of my seven year old "Netscape Composer" created websites about myself, about my dog and about my college project all have PageRank of either 6 or 7. I am assuming that it is because it is a Geocities hosted website. I don't think that anybody would have linked to my website about my college project!)
3) Once all my 10 Geocities hosted websites get a PR of 6 or 7, I will put a link to my main site (yeah, my picasso paiting site).
Question:
Won't this increase the PR of my main site?
If no, why?
If yes, what prevents others from doing this?
try searching for
link:urlofmygeoocitiespage on google
and see how many backlinks you have which are passing real pr to the page.
Google says "Your search did not match any documents"
this means that no pages (with a pr above the google backlink criteria pr3/4) are linking to you - so no pr is being passed onto you,
as others have said this strategy is a waste of time ... focus on making content for google - think big is beautiful (not page size but number of pages)
I'm just curious to know more about Google PR (and how it can be artificially inflated).
You could get penalized or banned by Google
Yes. Only if I'm caught. How can somebody catch me if I can create websites at Geocities anonymously?
Note: I made this post before I read djreg's and topr8's postings

Famous last words. :-)
Ask yourself:
1) Do you know more about SEO tricks than Google's antispam cops do?
2) Do you know more about SEO tricks than your competitors do?
If the answer to either question is "no," you'll be cruisin' for a bruisin' when you try to outsmart the experts.
Most people with PR8 home pages don't sell links or join link farms. Despite the press attention, PageRank reduces spam most of the time.
Anyway, now that you mention that it won't work, I can start thinking about "sneakier" ways to outsmart Google. I will make a post here when I come with something.

I'm sure we'll all look forward to hearing the results. :-)
I can appreciate what you say regarding the use of affiliates and PPC. But take what you have from these sources and add a couple thousand visitors from Google and friends, and you'll be making more.
I don't believe you can get legitimate PR6 by using the secret submission form! You need inbound links of all sorts to sustain a real PR of 6.
Try seeing if your PR6 Geocities site is cached. If not, PR does not equal 6.
Anyway, I feel that it is very difficult for Non-SEO webmasters to get any decent traffic from Google for highly competitive keywords. For me, PPC advertising is everything.
I think it works with geocities,
As a matter of fact I had a site which was hosted by geocities( I mean the same free homepage) and some how got page rank of 6 , How ever the only place it was submited was dmoz. my site is at the top of Yahoo results . Now a company is paying me a monthly fee to forward all traffic to his site.
Hey good is'nt it?
