I submitted on 10/22 and was wondering why I hadn't gotten spidered yet by googlebot.... Well.....I just realized that I submitted my site to Google via SelfPromotion.com. I did all of this before I came here and started reading all these threads and learning the do's and don'ts. Leave it to me to jump the gun and act BEFORE thinking....

Basically, I need to know if I totally scr*wed myself by submitting this way. I went ahead and just submitted again via the Addurl page on Google.com.

((GoogleGuy...your input would be appreciated too))

kstprod,

Google like links, so if you have no links then Google almost certainly won't list your site. The best thing you can do now is get links by:-

1) looking for them, and

2) building content to make a site people will link to by themselves.

You may want to have a good read through the Reciprocal Links forum and the Content forum for some ideas.

AFAIK, Selfpromotion.com basically works by feeding Google the same info in the same format it gets from its own addurl page... so you've essentially just submitted your site twice the exact same way, as far as Google is concerned. (of course they could probably tell the difference by referrer, but they don't seem to care)

However, I doubt it matters at all either way... the general consensus for a while has been that Google adds sites primarily through incoming links.

If you have a site that's already in Google, the quickest way to add the new one would be to put a link up on your older site, or submit your new site to some independent topical directories that Google crawls. (Or submit to DMOZ, if you're lucky enough to be in a category that gets updated frequently.)

I think you're worried about nothing.

I don't think you've created a "Big Oops".

If you get ONE link from a site that is already in Google, I'm sure the bot will come visiting.

However, it may take several WEEKS before the bot comes around!

Patience!

I do have a few links. I'm listed in About.com, ExactSeek, Scrub the Web, Open Here, and a few little ones.

Thank you guys for reassuring me, that it wasn't a big oops. I was really sweating that one! Patience is not one of my strong points, so I'll try to occupy myself otherwise for a while....lol

I liked the site (no affiliation). The info is a little outdated but for the most part it's still sound advice. WebmasterWorld is listed on the links page so it can't be all that bad. :)

If your site is the one in your profile that deals with babies, you don't show any backward links from several engines including alltheweb, altavista, google, msn and hotbot. Being spidered by these search engines and being listed on them doesn't usually count as a link. You need other websites to link to your website hopefully from a page that is ranked 4 or better so that you can get some PR "pagerank".

I'm still waiting to get indexed on the engines you mentioned. Also waiting on Dmoz and Yahoo.

Also, a few of the pages from Open Here that link to me are PR5, so this would help too, I assume? I also am linked from a relevant high PR website.

I think I'm just totally bored and don't know what to do with myself while I'm waiting to get picked up by the Big Guys. I've tweaked, tuned, brainstormed, searched for relevant links, etc. and all I seem to be able to do is read the posts here and check my logs every 5 minutes....lol

I guess I can just be happy with what visitors I do have for now, or p-p-p-p-pay for a couple little ones for some traffic to keep me busy. :)
