Is google penalizing for PopUps

I am trying to figure out why several of my sites have dropped over 100 positions in the last update. the only correlation between these sites and sites that have not dropped are popups.

Is google enforcing some sort of penalty for using PopUps?

re: technically, It would be simple...that's true...

Besides the editorials, much of the news is the same on different websites...I'd rather read the same story on any newssite without popupsunders then the NYTimes... I do get your point... It's just that huge corporate sites like NYTimes using popupsunders makes me SO MAD haha.

technically, google doesn't read urls beyond 101k.
So all url's having a popup after 101k are free of damage.

that cannot be,

From my reading of that article one might conclude that it's he doesn't want to see pop ups on the Google site. I don't think it casts a slur over other sites that use them.

Just a thought for what it's worth; when was the last time you ever caught yourself saying "Ooh goody! Look! An interesting pop up!"

"technically, google doesn't read urls beyond 101k."

What does this mean?

that means only text/data/links in the first 101 kb of a site is indexed.

check the cache of a file >101k you'll see there is a part missing. the part after 101k

Thanks. My files are small, so if there is a penalty I may be affected.

I know I am not the only one who has experienced a huge drop in positions. Lets callaborate. Maybe I am barking up the wrong tree with the POPUP theory.

I use popups all the time and have done for months...however, last time around, my google
rankings dropped. Was it because of the popups?
Hmmm...

Like...out of site! The only site that
didn't suffer was one which had a PR5
and is in Yahoo.

As far as the effectiveness of popunders goes, mine are closely related with my content and have a CTR of 20%. Of course CTR isn't everything, but if the same ad on the top of the page gets only 5% of the people to click, why shouldn't I use popunders?

Totally agree! Popunders (completely related to site content) ARE effective. If they weren't (and they must be,
considering how many people click on them) I would stop
using them in an instant. They are a totally legitimate
tool. So why do people seem to be so against them?

Maybe they associate popups/unders with the wireless camera ads (X10 or what was it called), that were just a nuisance and totally unrelated to the site.
Also, there's a difference between launching one popunder on a site and launching them every time the surfer clicks. I'm sure the latter makes him just want to close the browser window with the site.

I have since removed the pop-ups I was using. I am not against them if they are not disabling or obnoxious.

I am possible also seeing this negative effect for OnClick stuff.

They do make money for me, but if they are hurting my rankings, they are GONE!

I still think the jury is out on this. I've a competitor (also a friend) who also uses popunders. For a highly competitive keyword he comes in at 2 (I'm 7), so the popunder doesn't seem to have affected him...at least with regard to that site. He also has numerous sites, too, which dropped drastically following the last update. BTW, the No 1 site has the Google toolbar proudly displayed, for the world to see. No connection with that and it's top position...no, there couldn't be...no...not possible...no...

The only popups i've seen on yahoo are in the mail and free service sectors. Maybe that helps avoid tarnishing the main yahoo site's perfect 10 rating?

There's got to be some sort of penalty in there somewhere for excessive and recursive popups, which are undeniably annoying. But I have no hard evidence.

I get a pop-up on Yahoo! when I search...well, WHEN I search there of course ;)

I hate pop-ups.
Because of this, I'll feel really better if webmasters/SEOs start thinking that G. understand & penalize massive-boring pop-ups/under.

lol

:) :) :)

Speaking of ads, has anyone any thoughts on killing those blankety blank in-vue ads?

They are ten times more annoying than popups and that's saying a lot!

Start reading and the darn thing justs drifts across the screen right in front of the words...I personally hate them so much I don't go back to the site that has them!

Heard of any in-vue killers?
