Do you still tweak your page when it is ranked 1st or 2nd?

Howdy!
Am ranked 2nd for my primary keyword phrase on Google, and decided not to tweak the page at all this past month. When y'all get satisfactory placement for a phrase do you continue to tweak the page to prevent your competitors from overtaking you, or do you leave it be for fear of disturbing the equilibrium?

If I'am in first or second I just concentrat on gaining more links from highly relevant sites, no point changing something if your going to risk losing your SERP

and work on that second page of your site to be right behind it..;)

Some people say its best to be second or third listed, with less relevant pages above you (the searcher can finally rest assured with the most on-topic page).

Then you top it off with second page number ten listing on the bottom of the SERP page or a number 11 listing being first on the second page.

I keep trying to improve the site...we've been number one on our main two word search term on just about all the major SEs for nearly a year...tweaking hasn't harmed that...we did a big site revamp last year that lost us ranking in Google...but since it halved the number of pages most users needed to go through t o get to the correct main emargency info pages I think it was worth it...we've gained the ranking back...and we've gained it on nearly double the traffic and just over half the bandwidth usage

so go ahead and tweak if there's a genuine point to the change...but don't tweak just because you hope it'll help your rankings
