Wow, what a great site... I've been reading threads for the last week!

OK, now to my question.

I'm fairly new to the concept of optimizing a site for search engines such as Google. Following you discussions here, I know enough to get going. Here is where I'm at:

I did a Google site submit a month or so ago, and just recently I see just my default page appearing in the google index - it's buried deep but it's there - plus it was cached on 10/25.

However, when I search for my domain name, I get this one page plus something that looks like:

DomainName - A nice description... www.DomainName.com /-20K - Cached

<More results from www.DomainName.com>

And when I click for more results, I see the following:

www.domainname.com/page1.htm

www.domainname.com/page2.htm

www.domainname.com/forum/page3.htm

There is no description.. No cache. Also, my sites comes up with a Page Rank of 0, as do these other links.

Also, I should mention that when I do a Google search for my domain, I do get results from 3 other sites that link to me. I know for a fact that 20+ sites have links to me.

I was just added to the Yahoo directory mid last week, plus I have 2 DMOZ entries. I think my entries appeared after the last RDF dump.

So what happens next? Did Google decide not to crawl my entire site? I do have plenty of more content than what the above indicates. What should I expect to happen/what should I look for during this "dance"?

Thanks all... you're tremendous!

Okay some answers probably in order of importance:

Inbound links to your site do not always show in the link: search - only PR4 and above tend to show up.

Links will not show up immediately you may have to wait up to 2 months before they will show up.

Googlebot is in general pretty weel behaved in the way it spiders site and won't take too many pages in too short a space of time. On the other hand you can count on the bot to visit all of your pages if your navigation is good. It may take a little time, patience is a virtue, they say - When it comes to looking at how search engines work this is especially true.

Checking www2, I noticed my site is added and that under my default page description is a link to the DMOZ directory listing... However, when I click that link - it takes me to the Google Directory listing and I don't see my site listed there.

Why is that? How would Google know I'm in that DMOZ directory yet not have the actually listing show up in a search?

OK, now in WWW2/3 I see that my site is listed under the DMOZ category, with a PR next to it.. PR4, but at least it's not PR0 which it has been for the last couple of weeks since I've been in Google.

Also, I think my site is getting "fresh crawled?" because the cache is from Oct. 31, 2002 - but only my default page.

I did a check for my primary keyword and I'm coming up in 24th place in WWW2/3. That's better than being buried somewhere in the 1,000's so I'm encouraged that I've moved up.. although I wouldn't exactly call my keyword "competitive" - yet. None of this has switched over to WWW for any of my links or pages.
